China is already in the future
China’s railways now use a real name ticketing system. Every traveler must book with an official ID. For foreigners that ID is the passport.
When you book online and pay, your ticket automatically links to your passport number. At the station, you simply scan your passport at the gate to board. There is no need for a printed ticket in most major stations.
This system improves security and reduces queues. However, in smaller stations or on older routes, passengers may still need to collect a paper ticket at the counter. Always carry your original passport, as digital copies are not accepted.
